Licensed Bachelor Social Worker

LBSW

Entry-level license for bachelor's degree holders providing foundational social work practice authority under appropriate supervision.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work from CSWE-accredited program
  • Official transcripts sent directly to Board
  • Degree must include field practicum component

Examination & Application:

  • Pass ASWB Bachelor's examination
  • Complete application with required documentation
  • Background check and fingerprinting
  • Professional references as required

Practice Scope:

Licensed Independent Social Worker

LISW

Master's level license allowing independent practice in advanced generalist social work with expanded scope and responsibilities.

  • Official transcripts required

Experience & Examination:

  • Pass ASWB Master's examination
  • Two years post-MSW supervised experience
  • 4,000 hours of supervised social work practice
  • Supervision by qualified LISW or LISW-CP

  • Independent advanced social work practice
  • Program administration and supervision
  • Advanced case management
  • Cannot provide psychotherapy without additional credentials

Licensed Independent Social Worker - Clinical Practice

LISW-CP

Highest level clinical license allowing independent clinical practice, psychotherapy, and mental health treatment services.

Prerequisites:

  • Current LISW license in good standing
  • Master's degree with clinical concentration preferred
  • Meet all LISW requirements first

Clinical Experience:

  • Pass ASWB Clinical examination
  • 3,000 hours post-MSW clinical experience
  • Supervised clinical practice experience
  • Clinical supervision by LISW-CP or equivalent
  • Documentation of clinical competency

All South Carolina social work licenses expire on June 30th of even-numbered years. Complete 30 CE hours and submit renewal applications early.

🔄 Progressive Licensing System

You must hold each license level before advancing to the next. Cannot skip from LBSW directly to LISW-CP - must obtain LISW first.
