North Carolina's LCSWA license requires no initial exam, allowing immediate clinical practice. However, the ASWB Clinical exam must be passed before advancing to LCSW after completing two years of supervised experience.
The Board strongly discourages independent private practice during the LCSWA period and requires detailed plans for 24-hour emergency backup. LCSWAs are expected to work in agency settings with immediate clinical supervision access.
Only 50 hours of supervision via technology are initially allowed. Additional hours require Board approval through a special request process, evaluated case-by-case based on circumstances.
Effective April 1, 2025, license renewals, address changes, and verification requests must be completed online. Paper applications will require an Online Processing Waiver Request Form.
As of January 1, 2025, the Board no longer accepts personal/business checks or cash. Payments must be made by certified check, money order, cashier's check, or online portal.
