6-8 WeeksAs of January 1, 2022, Illinois eliminated the ASWB exam requirement for LSW licensure. MSW graduates can start working immediately after receiving their license, making Illinois one of the most accessible states for new social workers.
Illinois launched a new online licensing system called CORE in October 2024. Applications processed through the online system are being approved much faster than paper applications.
If you plan to practice in other states, they may still require ASWB exam scores. Consider taking the exam in Illinois for future mobility, even though it's not required for Illinois licensure.
Clinical supervision for LCSW must be provided by an Illinois-licensed LCSW. Out-of-state supervisors are not accepted, even with reciprocal agreements.
Illinois licenses expire on November 30th of odd-numbered years (2025, 2027, etc.). Plan ahead for renewal deadlines and continuing education completion.
