Navigate California's unique two-tier licensing system with the nation's highest social worker salaries and most employed social workers in the country.
California offers only two license levels, both requiring master's degrees. This streamlined system focuses on clinical practice with the highest social worker compensation in the nation.
Entry-level registration for MSW graduates. Required before accruing supervised experience. Allows supervised clinical practice in preparation for full LCSW licensure.
Registration: $75 • Annual renewal • 6-year maximum term (5 renewals) • Must pass Law & Ethics annually until passed
Full clinical licensure allowing independent practice, private practice ownership, direct billing, and supervision of other social workers. The gold standard for clinical social work in California.
Biennial renewal: $220 • 36 CE hours (6 ethics) • One-time courses: HIV/AIDS, child abuse, suicide risk

Graduate from CSWE-accredited MSW program. Complete clinical coursework and field placements. California only licenses master's level social workers.
2-3 YearsMust register within 90 days of graduation or lose hours. Pass Law & Ethics exam, complete background check, and submit required coursework documentation.
4-8 WeeksGain clinical experience under LCSW supervision. Must complete specific hour requirements including 750 hours of direct therapy. Document all hours carefully.
2-4 YearsSubmit licensure application, get approved for ASWB Clinical exam, pass the exam, then request initial license issuance to begin independent practice.
3-6 MonthsCalifornia social workers earn significantly above national averages across all specializations. Healthcare social workers average $93,200 annually, with opportunities in major metropolitan areas offering even higher compensation.
You MUST register as an ASW within 90 days of MSW graduation to count supervised hours toward licensure. Hours earned before ASW registration do not count toward your 3,000 hour requirement except under specific 90-day rule provisions.
California requires a state-specific Law & Ethics exam in addition to the ASWB Clinical exam. This exam must be taken annually during ASW status until passed, and must be passed before obtaining a subsequent ASW registration.
ASW registration has a maximum 6-year lifespan (5 renewals). If you don't complete LCSW requirements within 6 years, you must apply for a subsequent registration and cannot work in private practice settings thereafter.
California has specific requirements for the 3,000 supervised hours, including minimums for direct clinical work (2,000+ hours) and face-to-face therapy (750+ hours). Use the official ASW Weekly Log to track hours accurately.
In-state applicants need 66 hours of specific coursework/experience, out-of-state need 81 hours. This includes topics like human sexuality, child abuse assessment, substance abuse, aging, and psychopharmacology.
